Huey Lewis was born on July 5, 1950 in the hustling and bustling New York City . His father was an Irish American while his mother was a Polish refugee. The European roots played a major role in shaping his personality; however, his parents divorced when he was just 13. After achieving a perfect score of 800 on SAT Math Section, he was accepted at the prestigious Cornell University of the Ivy League. Before joining Cornell, Huey Lewis had an adventure hitchhiking not only across the country but also stowing away on a plane to Europe . He had a rough but exciting time traveling all over Europe playing his harmonica and in the process earning enough money for getting back to USA .
Huey Lewis had already become a skilled blues player while traveling through Europe . Although he started Cornell’s engineering program on a positive note but soon lost interest in his studies. He left during his junior year to pursue his real interest i.e. music. He started his career by joining the band Clover in 1971. He traveled to Britain with the band to take advantage of the popularity of folk-rock sound there; however, the shifting to the English soil was not successful as punk rock was more in there so the folk/pub rock albums didn’t garner enough sales. Due to this bad luck, Clover disbanded in 1978. Playing his harmonica on Thin Lizzy’s fantastic album “Live and Danger”, Huey Lewis didn’t let go of his passion for music. He found the future members of his band while playing with them at a club in California called Uncle Charlie’s. Soon, he established a proper band and achieved a record with Phonogram Records. The 1980s debut album received a lukewarm response; however, with “Picture This” in 1982, Huey Lewis and the News entered the world of commercial music with a big bang. The band rapidly climbed the ladder of success with the ultra hit album “Sports” in 1983, which crossed the ten million mark in America alone. That was followed by another multi-platinum album “Fore!” in 1986. Huey Lewis also wrote and sang two brilliant songs for the sci-fi iconic movie “ Back to the Future”. No one can forget the melodious beats of the “Power of Love”. Huey Lewis and the News continued to churn out hit singles one after another. The next two albums “ Small World” in 1988 and “Hart at Play” in 1991 were again hits but not as big hits as their previous album.
