HP Pavilion is located at 525 West Santa Clara Street, San Jose, California. The arena was opened as the San Jose Arena in 1993. Sharks radio play-by-play broadcaster Dan Rusanowsky always referred to it as the “spectacular” San Jose Arena before the building changed its original name under corporate sponsorship. Later, Compaq purchased the naming rights and the facility became Compaq Center at San Jose. After HP purchased Compaq in 2002, the company chose to name the arena after its product.
During reconstruction of the Oakland Coliseum Arena, the Golden State Warriors of the NBA has been using HP Pavilion as their home venue. Additionally, the defunct San Jose Rhinos of RHI, San Jose Grizzlies of the CISL, and the San Jose Lasers of the ABL also used the facility as their home..
This splendid facility has also been used for other sporting events, such as the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, the NCAA Basketball tournament , the Pac-10 women’s basketball championship, the Dew Action Sports Tour, and the SAP Open men’s tennis tournament.
HP Pavilion has the distinction of being one of the most active NHL venues. An average of 190 events a year are hosted in this arena.Many non-sporting events are also held in this arena. The HP Pavilion holds the record of selling the most tickets to non-sporting events of any venue in the United States, and the third highest in the world. This record was made for the nine-month period ending September 30, 2004.
Many wrestling events particularly WWE are held at HP Pavilion. The 1998 Royal Rumble and 2001 WWE’s SummerSlam were held at this arena. The Pavilion will host WWE’s The Great American Bash in 2007.
HP Pavilion has hosted the largest recorded audience for a mixed martial arts event. It was one of the greatest event at the facilty. About 18,265 people attended this wonderful event. The previous record was 14,562.
