Godspell is quite irreverent without being blasphemous at all. It is the re-telling of the traditional Gospel of St. Mathews and includes the scenes of “The Last Supper” and “Crucifixion”. The hippie appearance of the cast raised a controversy, however in 1999; Schwartz cleared things in his”Notes on the Script”.
In Godspell, the cast appears in contemporary clothes and there is use of modern technology such as cell phones and computers.
