Ghetto Klown is a Broadway production by fabled actor and comedian, John Leguizamo. It is stated as the ‘next chapter’ in an installment of various performances and stories by the comedian and it is part of a series preceded, in order, by Mambo Mouth, Spic-O-Rama, Freak, and Sexaholix – a Love Story. It is a story that is partly based on the actor-comedian’s various personal and professional experiences – and it is described as a story that is both unabashed and uncensored, a no holds barred story that is filled to the brim with enthusiastic energy and an enthralling performance. It is a performance that entertains the audience by enlightening them with a story about John Leguizamo’s various life experiences as well as the people who have been part of those experiences, people who are described in a highly colorful way.

Ghetto Klown begins with John Leguizamo narrating the various experiences of his childhood, his teen years recollected from the various memories he had of Queens as an adolescent. From this point on, after fully captivating the audience and keeping it in suspense, he moves on towards talking about his early days as an actor at the beginning of his prominent acting career. He then shows the audience what it was like to be a part of the so-called ‘avant garde theatre scene’ of the 1980s as well as the various movie sets he has been part of – the audience is even shown the various roles that he has played as an actor against roles played by some of Hollywood’s biggest names.

In fact, John Leguizamo has labeled Ghetto Klown as ‘the Wikileaks’ of his personal life. He precedes this by saying that Ghetto Klown consists of the various dialogues that he has with this personal therapist or with his manager but not with the public at large – Ghetto Klown is a way of relating these experiences to the public at large in a tasteful, entertaining and funny way. The set of Ghetto Klown itself is made up of various depictions of cities in their earlier days, when the story takes place, and it depicts Toronto, Philadelphia, Toronto and Santa Fe.

The person behind this play, John Leguizamo is not only an actor of immense rapport – having played opposite the likes of Al Pacino in a movie – but a standup comedian of immense talent and the ability to have the audience in gags within a matter of minutes. He has been involved with the theater world and Broadway for a long time. His first presence was in Mambo Mouth, incidentally the first chapter in the series that marks Ghetto Klown, an Off Broadway production which he wrote and acted seven different roles in.

His first play received an Obie Award as well as an Outer Critics Award. In fact, he was also ranked amongst the 12 Most Promising New Actors of 1991 in the John Willis Screen Worlds Vol. 43. Two years later, in 1993, he wrote and acted in Spic-o-Rama, a play in which he poked fun at the Stereotyping of Latinos within the US. This play won four Cable ACE Awards as well as a Drama Desk Award. Five years later, in 1998, saw his debut on Broadway with the play Freak. It was a play that revolved around John Leguizamo life experience with his troubled family and his messed up life. This particular play saw adaptation into an HBO film directed by Spike Lee and the play also won the Drama Desk Award for the Outstanding One Person Show.

In 2002, he wrote and acted in the play ‘Sexaholix…A Love Story’ in which he talked about his love life and also described how his family came into being. 2010 saw the release of the next installment of his autobiographical plays, a one man show titled as ‘Klass Klown’ and based on his recently published memoir – Pimps, Hos, Playa Hatas, and All the Rest of My Hollywood Friends: My Life .

The Ghetto Klown is the latest in his installment of plays and was initially performed in Toronto in Canada with the present performance at the Lyceum Theatre. As such, fans of comedy, of the actor and of his movies – and any other person looking for some theatre and to whom the Lyceum Theatre is easily accessible should definitely get Ghetto Klown tickets.
