Born and raised in Canada, she belongs to a family of artists. Although, her parents divorced while she was still very young, they both supported her musical pursuits. She was an avid singer in her church choir and wanted to become a writer as well. She was only twelve when winter Olympics took place in her native Calgary in which she participated as one of the many dancers in the opening ceremonies. Her serious musical pursuits started rather early and at the age of fifteen.
Feist started her own punk band called Placebo . She was the lead vocalists and along with the rest of the band members, Placebo started to work the local Calgary scene. The band was working its way up when their lead vocalist suffered from vocal cord damage. She left the band and started to play for other bands like Peaches , By Devine Right , and Noah’s Arkweld . She, however, did not take long to start her solo career.
Feist’s debut album was Monarch (Lay Your Jewelled Head Down) . Released in 1999, it did not do too well for Feist commercially. It did however, extremely well in Canada’s underground music scene and earned her many fans. The album had hot numbers like “That’s What I Say, It’s Not What I Mean”, “Monarch”, “It’s Cool to Love Your Family”, just to name a few. But what she was looking for as professional singer and musician came with the release of her second album.
Let It Die was her second album which was released in 2004. Considered largely an indie rock, bossa nova and jazz album, it became certified platinum. It also did extremely well on various music charts all over the world, reaching position no. 36 and 38 on the U.S. Billboard 200 Top Heatseekers and French Album Charts, respectively. It was also recorded in Paris. With appreciation of hit singles like “Mushaboom” and “Inside and Out”, from this album, she geared up to release another chart-buster.
Feist released The Reminder in 2007. This album enjoyed success like none of her predecessors. It sold well over 30,000 copies in its first week of release. It also reached position no. 16 on the U.S. Billboard 200. It was also the best selling album on 2007 on the iTunes music store. While all thirteen of the songs did extremely well, but a few became unforgettable, like “1234”, “The Limit to Your Love”, “The Water”, “My Moon My Man”, and “I Feel It All”. The album also earned her four Grammy nominations.
Her latest stuff could be heard on Metals . Released very recently, it has been well received both by her fans and critics.
