History
Bayern Munich was founded in 1900 by members of a Munich based gymnastics club. Some members of the gymnastics club, MTV 1879, decided that they would not allow the club’s soccer players to join the DFB (German Football Association). As a consequence, eleven members of the club’s soccer team left and formed a new soccer based club; Fußball-Club Bayern München.
The newly formed club immediately registered several victories against their local rivals and qualified for the semi finals of the South German Championship during the 1900-01 season. The club kept on winning local trophies in the following years before joining the newly formed Bavarian regional league, the Kreisliga in 1910. They won the league in the inaugural year, but failed to win it again till 1914, after which, soccer was halted in the country due to the onset of World War I.
They won their first South German Championship in 1926 and went on to win their first national title in 1932. The rise of Nazism stunted the growth of the club as it had strong Jewish affiliations and FC Bayern endured a sustained period of mediocrity. After the war years, they struggled financially, despite winning their first DFB Pokal in 1955.
In 1963, the various soccer leagues in Germany (Oberligas) were consolidated to form the country’s national premier league, which would now be called the Bundesliga. Bayern Munich won promotion to the league two years later with a young squad, which boasted relatively unknown talents at the time, like Franz Beckenbauer, Sepp Maier and Gerd Muller.
Golden Era
From 1965-1979, the club enjoyed its golden years. Due to the afore mentioned players, who would go on to be called “The Axis,” FC Bayern went on to win five league titles, five DFB Pokal titles and three consecutive European Cups during this time. The club also won the Intercontinental Cup during this time by defeating Brazilian side Cruzeiro.
That era signaled the beginning of Bayern Munich’s dominance over Germany. Since then, the club has won twenty more league titles, thirteen more DFC Pokals, two Champions League titles, one UEFA Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. The club also shifted stadiums during this time and moved from the renowned Olympiastadion to the ultra modern Allianz Arena.
Some of the most notable players who have donned the club’s famous colors include Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Muller, Uli Hoeneß, Paul Breitner, Franz Roth, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Lothar Matthäus, Stefan Effenberg, Oliver Kahn, Mehmet Scholl and Bixente Lizarazu.
Current Squad
Bayern Munich has been synonymous with the renowned German efficiency. The club manages its affairs in a wonderful way and consistently manages to attract the best players and coaches in the world. The club’s current squad features international stars from all over the world including multiple World Cup winners from the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which Germany won.
The current German national squad, which is considered by most to be the best side in international soccer, is mostly made up of Bayern Munich players. Respected worldwide, these players include the likes of Manuel Neuer, Jérôme Boateng, Mario Götze, Philipp Lahm and Thomas Müller. International stars that play in the side include Spain’s Thiago Alcantra and Javi Martinez, Brazil’s Rafinha and Douglas Costa, France’s Kingsley Coman, Poland’s Robert Lewandowski and Chile’s Arturo Vidal.
The upcoming season will be an exciting one for fans of the club. The revolutionary Pep Guardiola has decided to leave the manager’s position at the club and he will be replaced by former Real Madrid and AC Milan coach, Carlo Ancelloti. One of the most respected names in world soccer, Ancelloti is a proven winner and it will be interesting to see what heights the German club can reach with him at the helm.
