And just kick things up a notch, the fathers even bring in some traveling actors and make them a part of their trickery by asking them to kidnap Luisa so that Matt can play the role of Luisa’s heroic savior. After doing so, Matt and Luisa apparently get rid of their fathers’ feud and receive their fathers’ blessings as well, something that they have had all along. But soon after Matt and Luisa discover about the deception of their fathers, they decide to part and go separate ways. After parting, both of them set to experience the real world and try to find love on their own; but soon they discover the harsh realities of the real world and decide to stick together with each other. The first and original incarnation of the musical was staged by the name of Joy Comes to Deadhorse in 1956 at the University of New Mexico. From there the musical was then moved to Barnard College in 1959 after significant re-writing of the story and the whole plot.
 
Fantasticks made its off-Broadway debut on May 3, 1960 at the Sullivan Street Playhouse in Greenwich Village in New York City. The original off-Broadway production of the musical starred Rita Gardner for the role of Luisa, El Gallo was played by Jerry Orbach, while the lead role of Matt was played by Kenneth Nelson. The original off-Broadway production of the musical is known for being produced by a very low budget and it was directed by Word Baker. At that time major Broadway productions cost around $250,000, but the Fantasticks’ production cost was only $1,441.The entire set design of the musical is one of the key reasons for its success. On August 23, 2006 an a revival off-Broadway production of the musical made way at the Snapple Theater Center located within the New York City.
