One of the most successful Broadway musicals of the first decade of the 21st Century, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, is on tour once again. If you missed it the first time or want to watch it again then here is your chance to do so. Just purchase the Dirty Rotten Scoundrels tickets first.
David Yazbek, a well-known American composer and write, composed and wrote the songs of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. He based the story of the musical on the film of the same name which was released in 1988 and starred Steve Martin and Michael Caine. Its premier show was presented in San Diego, California in September, 2004. It debuted on Broadway in March 2005 at the Imperial Theatre. The musical was an instant hit. It went on to be staged for over six hundred times over a period of almost two years. Tony Award winner Jack O’Brien was its director, Jerry Mitchell its choreographer, David Rockwell its scenic designer, Gregg carves its costume designer, and Kenneth Posner its lighting designer.

Right after its Broadway productions, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels went on a tour of the US. Its first leg was called the Equity tour which began on August 4, 2006 and ended next year on August 19, 2007. The second leg was the non-Equity tour which included performances in twenty five cities. It started in Dayton, Ohio on September 25, 2007 and came to an end the following year with its last performance in Memphis, Tennessee on March 23, 2008. The way its success was growing, there was little doubt that the play would go international and that’s exactly what happened. Now it is being produced in cities in Far East like Tokyo, Seoul and also in European cities of Stuttgart, Stockholm, Oslo, Tampere and Madrid. Its future tours include performances in London, Copenhagen and Reykjavik.
The reason for the popularity of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels can be attributed to its hilarious comic scenes and an interesting storyline about two con artists. The musical consists of two acts. In the first act, we are introduced to Lawrence Jameson, a con-artist, whose main job is to swindle money out of wealthy women at a casino. While travelling on train, he watches another con-artist, Freddy Benson swindle money out of a rich lady. In Lawrence’s opinion, Freddy could have done better. So he brings Freddy to his mansion. Freddy is impressed with Lawrence’s wealth and expertise and asks Lawrence to teach him some of his tricks. Lawrence agrees but doesn’t give the whole process any importance until Freddy comes to his help by pretending to be his repulsive brother when a woman he has conned, Jolene Oakes demands marriage at gun point. This makes him realize that the town is not big enough to accommodate both of them. They sign a deal where the first one to swindle fifty thousand dollars would stay in the town and the other would have to leave. Freddy cons “The American Soap Queen, Christine Colgate” by pretending to have waist-down paralysis which can be cured by the therapist, Dr. Shuffhausen who takes $50,000. She offers to pay. But Freddy finds out that Dr. Schuffhausen is actually Lawrence.

In the second act, Lawrence finds out that Christine is not rich. They change the bet to whether Freddy sleeps with her or not. After the night he apparently does, Christine goes to Lawrence and tells him Freddy robbed her. Lawrence compensates by giving her $50,000. Sometime later, Freddy returns and they both come to know that Christine is the famed con artist, “The Jackal” who robbed Freddy and then took money from Lawrence. The musical ends with the two plotting another scam for Christine.
