Canadian musician deadmau5 was born with the real name of Joel Thomas Zimmerman in 1981 at Niagara Falls, Ontario . He has been producing music in genres like electro, progressive and house, and has earned great fame in quite a small amount of time.
deadmau5 stepped into the world of music in 1990s, and was inspired greatly by the chiptune movement in the beginning of his career. The deadmau5 that he used for himself was in fact a stylization of Dead Mouse , the name that he used for himself before becoming famous on IRC. He narrates that he found a dead mouse in his computer while replacing a video card, and when discussed the issue over a chat room at IRC, they started calling him the dead mouse guy. It was later stylized to deadmau5. He is often seen at his concerts wearing a costume on his head that resembles a mouse head.
It was not before early 2000s that deadmau5 released some of his earliest compilations in the form of EPs like Just Before 8bit and Project 56 in which he compiled 56 demos. The EP titled Just Before 8bit was later included in his first studio album named Get Scraped , that was released in 2006. In his first studio album, deadmau5 worked in many genres of modern music, including Trip Hop, Noise Pop, Ambient / Downtempo and IDM. Shortly after the release of his first studio album, he started a record label with the name of mau5trap . The new record label released his next album titled Random Album Title in collaboration with Ministry of Sound and Ultra Records . In this album he also worked in close connection with the American producer from San Francisco named Kaskade . A significant milestone in his career came when his track titled Move for Me was ranked at number one position on Hot Dance Airplay charts by Billboard Magazine in September 2008. The track was also produced in collaboration with Kaskade . It was followed by 2 more of his tracks reaching number one position on Billboard Charts , a privilege not shared by any other Canadian artist with him. Apart from him, only three other Canadian artists have ever reached number one position on Billboard Charts in the US, namely Nelly Furtado, Deborah Cox and Dragonette .
For his great efforts in modernizing the musical scene and creating quality music, deadmau5 has been acknowledged at many levels by the critics. At 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , he was named as the house DJ, and was also titled as the MTV PUSH artist of the week . According to him, he has always acknowledged the efforts of David Guetta and Lady Gaga for the modern music, as he believes it is for their efforts that pop music has a strong element of dance now and musicians like him have a good future.
The work of deadmau5 has been appreciated on international level and he has earned many awards and nominations for his music. Beatport Music Awards nominated him as the Best Progressive House Artist and he also became the most awarded producer / DJ at Beatport Music Awards . He also received International Dance Music Awards for Best Artist and Best Canadian DJ, and Best Electro Track for Ghosts ‘n’ Stuff in 2010.
