Cain’s Ballroom
Cain’s Ballroom is a historic music venue in Tulsa, OK. which has seen several generations of musical trends come and go; country-western, rock, swing, jazz, and more recently new wave, alternative, and indie. Lots of big-name entertainers from the 1970s and 1980s performed here before they became famous, and that tradition continues today, with artists like Marilyn Manson and the Crystal Method now part of Cain’s storied history. Originally built in 1924 as a garage for one of Tulsa’s founders, Tate Brady, the building was soon renamed “The Louvre” and opened to the public. Soon it became an internationally known night spot for the nouveau riche oil boom town. Oklahoma catered to its oil elite, however, with gin joints, speakeasies, ‘reputable houses’, and boot leg border running. By 1929, this corner stone establishment effectively changed hands to suit the social environment standards.
In 1930 Madison W. “Daddy” Cain purchased the building and named it Cain’s Dance Academy. His involvement in Tulsa society on many fronts led to a turning point in the history of music and the role Cain’s played in it. Hosting dance lessons and evening gatherings, the hot spot hit full gear. Jazz, rag, blues, country, and other hot foot popular genres, were among the band styles booked consistently. At the time, an un-named genre of music was quite popular in the southern states. It was commonly known as “that hot hillbilly music”. The musicians involved in this movement were the core root of what became known as Western Swing which gave birth to Rock and Roll. These musicians ‘spoke’ the language of music which was undergoing a drastic evolution of creativity and expirimentation. From Harlem, to New Orleans, to Chicago, to Oklahoma, to Texas and beyond, these artists were breaking the barriers of social taboo through music.
At the time, Cain’s was well known for the artistry and diversity of musicians it hosted. By 1932, Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys took the basics of jazz, rag, honky tonk, blues, country, cowboy music, dixie land, swing, early big band and other genres to define the future of popular music. Their home base was Cain’s Dance Academy where Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys could pack over a thousand dancers each night they played. Their radio broadcast performances from KVOO (1934 – 1942) in conjunction with Cain’s were heard by popular demand. These boys and the Cain?s defied racial, financial, and social boundaries with lyrics, music, as well as the first music and movie publicity campaign coast to coast.
The Texas Playboys’ guitars and Bob’s over hand fiddle work laid the foundation standards for modern music. All the early Rock n Roll greats were influenced by ‘that guitar sound’ that ‘Tulsa sound’ that ‘Cain’s hop’ as can be heard in examples such as Twin Guitar Boogie, Fat Boy Rag and Cadillac in Model ‘A’. Their drummers broke boundaries along side the piano players setting standards for modern percussion work. They would travel hundreds of miles in a bus (remember, this is the 30’s and 40’s) for a one night dance hall set, return the next day to Tulsa for a KVOO Cain’s live broadcast, do it again the next day all the while making it home to play Cain’s Ballroom every Thursday and Saturday night.
Over the next few years Cain’s changed hands numerous times. In 1976, Larry Schaeffer purchased the building, and reopened it with the current name, Cain’s Ballroom. In 1978, Cain’s Ballroom was one of only a few venues to host the Sex Pistols in their only American tour. Hosting the Sex Pistols underlined the venue as the pioneering force of the history of Rock and Roll. Since that time, Cain’s has experienced an impressive increase in bookings of cross genre hubbin’ and has housed a vast array of our modern age of musical subversion and experimentation artists. Shaeffer never had enough money to renovate the Cain’s, so he put it up for sale in 1999 and two brothers bought it. They put it up for sale again in 2002. The father of Chad Rodgers, the venue’s current general manager, was a local neurosurgeon, bought the building.
In the spring of 2003, they closed the ballroom for extensive renovations. They tore out the ceiling, installed new plumbing, immense bathrooms, central heating and air conditioning. They also restored the portraits of the performers. They bought a warehouse next door and made it into a bar called Bob’s, with a second stage. A new barrel roof and a second-level mezzanine were installed. The stage was enlarged. Four months later, the doors reopened with a sold-out Dwight Yoakam show. They host Doc Roc Productions as its show production team. Each March, the Cain’s hosts the annual Bob Wills birthday party. Wills’ former bandmates Leon Rausch and Tommy Allsup perform.
