Borussia Dortmund was formed way back on 19^th December, 1909. The club got its name from the beer names Borussia which was manufactured by Borussia Brewery in the city of Dortmund. The club didn’t enjoy a lot of success for the first few decades or so as those years were spent in trying to get a foot hold in the sport. It was post World War II that the album started making an impact on the sport in the country. In 1949 they made it to their first ever league final where they lost to Mannheim. The late 1950’s kick started their first era of sustained domination.

They went on to capture their first league title in the year 1956 and followed that up by making it two in a row when they successfully defended their crown in the next season. Another title came their way in 1963 to put the team on the map of German football.
 
Borussia Dortmund won the German Cup for the first time in 1965. In 1966 they became the first German club to win a European trophy when they lifted the European Cup Winners after beating Liverpool in the final. The next two decades or so resulted in a drought trophy wise but that all changed when they captured another German Cup in 1989. The arrival of the legendary Ottmar Hitzfeld as the coach in 1991 ushered a new era of domination. They won the league four years later and repeated the trick in 1996. The next year Borussia Dortmund reached the Promised Land when they won the UEFA Champions League by beating overwhelming favorites Juventus in the final. They added the Intercontinental Cup to their trophy cabinet later that year.
 
They captured one more league title in 2002. After a few quiet years they picked the pace once again and won the league twice in 2011 and 2012. On the way to winning the title in 2012, the club accumulated the most points by a German football cub in history.
