Best Man New York is a performance of Gore Vidal’s The Best Man which was also turned into a hit film. This play is written by Gore Vidal and it premiered in 1960 at the Morosco Theatre in New York City. The subject of this play is the US presidency and particularly follows five presidential candidates as they view for their party’s nomination. The setting for this political story is a convention in Philadelphia. Soon after its premiere, it was nominated not for one but six Tony Awards including the Tony Award for Best Play. In 1964, it was adapted into a movie of the same name. Over five hundred performances of the play occurred until 1961 and the original run starred Frank Lovejoy and Melvyn Douglas. Incidentally, President Ronald Reagan also auditioned for a role in the play but Gore Vidal did not think he would make a credible president at the time. In 2000, a revival of the play occurred at the Virginia Theatre on Broadway and ran for over a hundred performances. Best Man New York is part of a second Broadway revival of the play whose previews took place in 2012 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. This cast stars James Earl Jones as the President, John Larroquette as the presidential candidate, Angela Lansbury and Candice Bergen. It has received rave reviews in the media such as The New York Times and is the recipient of one Tony Award out of seven Tony Award Award nominations. It has also won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revival of a Play.
