The Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall is deeply rooted in the history of theater. Over the years, it has been modified to the specifications of contemporary theatrical art, and yet it retains the essence of what performing arts was like decades ago. The Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall tickets allow you to experience the new age performances in the historical grandeur.

The Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall was established in 1928 in Portland, Oregon. It was named the Portland Publix Theater. Its building was designed by an eminent architectural firm, Rapp and Rapp. The design was based on the Northern Italianate and French Renaissance style of building. It was considered to be more lavish and grander for Portland’s size. In 1930, the venue was renamed The Paramount because the owners were under contract to run local films produced by Paramount only.

What made the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall so awe-inspiring was its twenty meter high sign which read “Portland” (1928-30) and later “Paramount” (1930-1984). It was lit by more than six thousand lights. There were many foyers and lobbies whose walls were decorated with marble and mirrors and floor with lush carpets. There were long, marble concession stands which were famous for being the “longest candy counter in the West”. Huge chandeliers hung from the ceilings. Men and ladies’ lounges provided respite during intervals. The auditorium itself was decorated with murals and balconies. It had a seating capacity of almost three thousand. If you were born in the first half of the twentieth century, you would have experienced the elegance bordering on decadence of that time period only by visiting this famous venue. The Portland City gave it the Landmark Status in 1972 and a few years later, registered it in the National Register of Historic Places .

The building of the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall started disintegrating and required a lot of money for its upkeep. As a result, it was sold to West Coast Theatres, a company in Seattle, in 1976. The process of renovation began in 1983. After restoration in 1984, the building was named after Arlene Schnitzer, whose husband contributed generously to its reestablishment. The aim was to restore the opulence of the original design. So the venue that you see today greets you with the “Portland” sign in neon letters. Though the number of seats remains the same, the stage has been enlarged. A choir loft has been added that seats fifteen musicians. A flexible, portable shell has been placed for acoustic purposes. The chandeliers now carry new crystals in rocco-style. The color schemes have been changed from gold, green and rose to neutral hues and teal.
The Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall is now an integral component of the Portland Center for the Performing Arts. It is home venue of ‘The Oregon Symphony’, orchestra for the youth ‘Metropolitan Youth Symphony’, the sensational ‘Portland Youth Philharmonic’, Portland Arts & Lectures as well as the White Bird Dance Company. Listen to these and a lot more with your Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall tickets.
