Chapel Hill, North Carolina based American indie rock band Archers of Loaf was formed in 1990. It remained active for over eight years, and released four studio albums before breaking up in 1998. The band mainly specialized in Indie rock and Noise rock types of music, and remained fairly popular throughout the time they presented music in front of people. The band has become active once again after a long time of staying dormant, and now the reunion consists of four members, including Matt Gentling, Eric Bachmann, Mark Price and Eric Johnson.

History of the band dates back to early 1990s, when Eric Bachmann teamed up with Matt Gentling, Mark Price and Eric Johnson in the city of Asheville to form the band named Archers of Loaf. Eric was always interested in music right from his teenage years, and pursued studies related to music and arts. He was studying Saxophone at Appalachian State but never completed his degree owing to the fact as he himself narrates it, that he believed his place was at an even bigger stage and he did not want to complete a degree in a stereotypical fashion and become a high school band director like most of the people did after completing their degree in music and arts.

The band released its first compilation of songs in 1992 that was also promoted with a free issue of Stay Free! Magazine as an incentive. It was followed by release of some singles including Wrong and Web in Front. The song Web in Front was also featured on many TV channels, especially on Network USA’s late night movie feature called Up All Night. The first album by Archers of Loaf was released in 1994 with the title Icky Mettle that established the band as one of the significant new comers in the industry. The album was acclaimed both critically as well as commercially, and most people believe that this album acted as a landmark for alternative rock music in 1990s. The song Web in Front was also titled as one of the top 500 songs of the decade by Pitchfork Media in its book The Pitchfork 500.

The band released an EP titled Vs the Greatest of All Time in 1994, followed by another full length studio album titled Vee Vee in 1995. An interesting fact about these releases was that the song The Greatest of All Time was not included in the EP, and was included in the album that was released later. The band also performed on many tours across the nation and internationally, and attracted thousands of fans in their concerts. One significant tour was in 1995 in collaboration with another American band named Weezer. The Archers of Loaf were expecting their opening act to be very exciting, but for some reason the experience did not go very well.

Third studio album released by Archers of Loaf was titled All the Nation’s Airports, released in 1996. The album was distributed by Elektra Records and received a remarkable response from public. It was followed after two years by their last LP titled White Trash Heroes, which, according to most of the critics, was quite different from their previous releases. Their music and singing style both seemed to deviate from the work they had been producing previously. Nevertheless, public liked it, and the LP had a mixed response from critics, some giving it more positive response than others, while others not liking it much. The band finally disbanded after one of its lead figures, Mark Price, had a surgery for Carpel Tunnel Syndrome and the remaining members decided to quit working together.

After following solo career for quite a long time, the band has finally decided to sing together once again in 2011.
