The Kelly Cup winners will be stepping onto the ice again after their convincing win over the Ontario Reigns in the Nov 2011 three game series. After comfortably winning the first game, The Aces lost the second game before getting their act together and defeated the Reigns (7-4) in the final. Alaska Aces tickets were hard to come by as the Aces outplayed the Reigns in front of a packed home crowd. The Aces are now challenging the Grizzlies for the ECHL’s Conference lead with the Wranglers also in the running. The Aces can thank Berube for the series win as he gave up 4 goals in the first period of the final. This not only boosted Aces confidence but also gave them the ever so important lead.
The Alaska Aces were able to capitalize on their early lead and kept pressure on the Reigns. After their unfortunate loss in the second game, Aces went with a different game strategy. Although Adam Courchaine made an impressive season debut in the second game, he was dropped from the final game in favor of Gerald Coleman. Berube, who played brilliantly against the Aces in the second game of the series, could not handle Aces relentless attack in the final. He gave up 4 goals in the first period before he was benched. Carlson took over from Berube and saved 15 shots in the second period but it was already too late as Coleman on the other end made 22 saves and did not give the Ontario Reigns any chance of making a significant comeback.
Although the Reigns put up a fight by scoring a couple of goals and at one stage the score was (5-4).It looked as if it was going to be a nail biter but the Aces forwards pulled another couple of goals to seal the series. Reigns simply could not recover after the first period catastrophe. Alaska Aces tickets were in demand as the series was leveled before the game. The Sullivan Arena inhabitants on the big night were hoping for an explosive conclusion to an interesting series but the Aces kept a vice like grip on the proceedings and did not let any chance go to waste. Aces coach Rob Murray had to make some changes due to an injured Scott Howes because of a head shot tackle by Bill Bagron of Eagle River. Bagron was suspended for two games.
The Alaska Aces have a promising new star goalie with Courchaine making his season debut. His impressive performance was applauded by his team mates and fans as well. The Aces has a very strong team this season and all the players look in great form. Although defense looks weak with David Shields back with Peora of the American Hockey League, Chad Anderson injured with a broken foot and Steve Ward on the bench because of a lower body injury. Because of the shortage in defense, the Aces pulled Chris Bruton from the wings to help beef up the defense for the time being. Coach Murray admitted that he had some forwards switch to defense in practice just to get an idea if they had any options. Murray further commented that Bruton looked very comfortable switching positions which was encouraging.
Alaska Aces as a result of the three game series win over the Ontario Reigns are in the top bracket with the Utah Grizzlies and Ontario Reigns leading. Alaska Aces formerly Anchorage Aces has a very loyal fan base which was evident from the reception they received at their home stadium. The Aces boast a strong line up with Bruton and Ambroz handling the wings, Gentile and Dzielski in defense, Harrison and Lankow in the center and Coleman and Courchaine as goalies.
