The Alabama Theatre is a near century old theatre and movie place located in Birmingham, Alabama. It is the only functioning theatre of the district which was once the hub of numerous large ones presenting performing arts, vaudeville and nickelodeons.

The Alabama Theatre was constructed by the Paramount’s Publix Theater Chain in 1927 as the prime southeast theatre of the US. With a seating arrangement of two thousand five hundred, it was the largest theatre of the time, its construction costing around $1.5 million. It consisted of an exclusive organ which was a Crawford Special-Publix One Mighty Wurlitzer. Only twenty five were made of this kind and Alabama is one of three who has it installed in its original place. The theatre and its well preserved historic Wurlitzer Ogan have been included to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage as well as National Register of Historic Places. Albama Theatre tickets provide you the chance to visit and explore this historic structure that has showcased countless movies and theoretical acts over the generations.

One of the most famous features of the theatre was its exclusive Mickey Mouse Club formed in 1933. The club was a great source of attraction for the children who gathered in large numbers to watch cartoons and participate in performances as well as other activities. Within a short time of two years following the club’s formation, it catapulted into the largest Mickey Mouse Club of the world consisting of more than seven thousand members.Another one of the famous features of Alabama Theatre was the Miss Alabama Pageant. The pageant was a regular event taking place at the theatre. Following the Miss America Pageant rules and standards, the Alabama theatre initially hosted the Miss Birmingham Pageant. However, later it transformed into the Miss Alabama Pageant.

During the downfall of the district in the 1960s and 1970s, a number of theatres were shut down. The Alabama Theatre too was sold to Cobb Theatres of Birmingham who further sold it to Costa and Head. Working on the development and revival of the downtown area, Costa and Head began showcasing classic movies at the Alabama Theatre. The Alabama’s historic organ was purchased by Birmingham Landmarks in 1987 and from then on the theatre came to be known as the Alabama Theatre for Performing Arts. Six years later in 1993, it was named as the official state historic theatre of Alabama. The theatre went through a process of complete renovation in 1998. During this time, its gold leaf, paints, seats, carpets and drapes were all replaced. The Albama Theatre along with Lyric Theatre (a vaudeville theatre) falls in Birmingham Landmark’s ownership.

The Alabama Theatre continues to entertain its audiences hosting over two hundred entertainment events and drawing an audience of over 400,000 on an annual basis. From concerts to opera, from ballet to movies and Broadway acts, the Alabama Theatre showcases a diverse range of performances and activities.
