Australian hard-rock band ACDC features one of rock’s most rhythmic duos – brothers Angus and Malcolm – and buoyed by the infamous throaty drawl of singer Brian Johnson.Malcolm pounded out bone crunching rhythms and younger brother Angus picked out brilliantly powerful leads. Young became as famous for mooning audiences regularly as for his gritty blues-based lead guitar and songs. With sounds melded into a virtual hard rock nuclear power plant, the group’s raucous image, constant touring and raw, juvenile lyrics helped make them one of the top hard-rock bands in history.
ACDC’s power-chord roar turned out as one of the most influential hard rock sounds of the ’70s. The band was originally formed in 1973 in Australia by guitarist Malcolm Young. While forming the original line-up, Malcolm recruited bassist Larry Van Kriedt, vocalist Dave Evans, and Colin Burgess. The band, with lead singer Angus would play some gigs around Sydney. It’s said that when Malcolm and Angus informed their parents to play together in a band they laughed for they wouldn’t last a week because the two fought so much. However, time witnessed that what ever the duo did, it worked out.
While still in Sydney, the band, then joined by singer Dave Evans, cut a single titled ‘Can I Sit Next to You’. The original line-up was later signed to the EMI-distributed Albert Productions label for Australia and New Zealand. ACDC came up with the music which, in its own way, was a reaction against the pompous art rock and lumbering arena rock of the early ’70s. Combined with Bon Scott’s larynx-shredding vocals, the group produced countless imitators over the next two decades. They moved to Melbourne where the band’s chauffeur, Bon Scott, became their lead vocalist when Dave Evans, refused to go on-stage.
Scott helped cement the group’s image as brutes. Throughout their career, ACDC favored crude double entendres, spiked with a mischievous sense of fun. They released two albums: ‘High Voltage’ in 1974 and ‘TNT in 1975. ACDC’s subsequent album, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, was released in the same year. The album was not released in the US until 1981, by which time the group was at the peak of its popularity. In the fall of 1977, they released ‘Let There Be Rock’, which became their first album to chart in the U.S.
Powerage proved to be an album that helped expanding the band’s audience even further. The single was released in spring of 1978. But what really broke the doors down for them was the following year’s Highway to Hell. The album became the first ACDC LP to break into the US top 100, eventually reaching #17. It put greater emphasis on backing vocals yet featuring the band’ signature sound: loud, simple, pounding riffs and grooving backbeats. Highway To Hell also propelled ACDC into the top ranks of hard rock acts.
The group’s train was derailed when their lead singer Bon Scott died on February 20, 1980. In March, ACDC replaced Scott with Brian Johnson and recorded Back in Black the next month. Back in Black proved to be their biggest album and a hard rock landmark. It sold more than ten million copies in the U.S. alone. The following album, ‘For Those About to Rock We Salute You’, also sold well in 1981. It featured two of the band’s most popular singles: ‘Let’s get it up’ and ‘For Those About to Rock’. These singles reached #13 and #15 in the UK respectively.
In 1982, Rudd left ACDC and was later replaced by Simon Wright. After 1983’s album titled ‘Flick of the Switch’, the group’s commercial standing began to slip. In 1990, they were able to reverse their slide with ‘The Razor’s Edge’. The album spawned a hit ‘Thunderstruck’. While not the commercial powerhouse as they were during the late ’70s and early ’80s, they managed to maintain their status as a top international concert draw in 90’s. They released their 16th album, Ballbreaker, in the fall 1995.
ACDC continued to shake into the Millennium and showed no sign of stopping. In the first quarter of 2000, the band spawned Stiff Upper Lip. The album was well-received by fans. ACDC remained a major concert draw, and its albums consistently went platinum.
