Ramon Ayala is a revered name in Mexican norteno music circles. The famous bajo sexto, drums and accordion player has popularized a genre and contributed truckloads of phenomenal hits over five glorious decades. Born in Monterrey, Mexico in 1945 to musician father Pedro Ayala, he started playing the accordion by six, then learning drums and the 12-string bajo sexto. The teenage Ayala pioneered the commercially appealing conjunto and norteno genres, borne out of the polka influences of Eastern European settlers in Mexico and southern Texas. He played in Los Jilgueros de Marin and Los Pavorreales before forming Los Relampagos del Norte with Cornelio Reyna. Their lively distinctive music culminated in their first 1964 hit single “Ya No Llores”. After Reyna abdicated the successful act in 1971, Ayala formed Sus Bravos del Norte with a succession of vocalists. Antonio Sauceda was followed by the glorious years with Eliseo Robles and Antonio Coronado before Mario Marichalar brought his youthful exuberance.
 
 
Ayala has recorded 88 albums with 45 cassette and CD recordings. En Vivo got him an American Grammy, while he has also won two Latin Grammys. His prolific work won him the 2009 ‘Bajo Sexto Player of the Year Award’.
