San Jose Sharks – A Little History

The San Jose Sharks were formed as an expansion team in 1991 as part of the National Hockey League (NHL). The team was created as part of the league’s efforts to expand into non-traditional markets, with San Jose being the first major league professional sports franchise in Northern California.

The Sharks played their first game on October 4, 1991, against the Vancouver Canucks and lost 4-3. The team’s name was chosen through a fan contest, with “Sharks” being selected as a nod to the large number of shark sightings in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Brent Burns: Burns played for the Sharks from 2011 to 2022. He is a two-time Norris Trophy winner as the NHL’s top defenseman, a First-Team All-Star, and a member of the Canadian Olympic team. He has also been one of the best offensive defensemen in the league, leading all blueliners in goals in the 2016-2017 season.
