The CMA Music Festival is one of the most popular country music festivals today in the US, as well as one of the oldest festivals. It was launched in 1972 and has been held each year since then, in the capital of country music, Nashville in Tennessee. It was created by and is organized by the Country Music Association, known also for their CMA Awards given to country music artists for outstanding achievements in music. The first ever festival was held at the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, with more than five thousand fans attending. This festival also saw one hundred plus booths and a total of twenty hours of live performances. In 1973, the participants grew to ten thousand. In 1974, a phenomenal event occurred when Paul McCartney performed at the festival, the first non-country music artist to do so. It also featured the last concert by Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton before ending their partnership.
 
In 1982, the CMA Music Festival moved to the Tennessee State fairgrounds, expanding to accommodate the increasing number of visitors.  It has attracted the biggest artists in country music and even artists from pop music. In 2011 alone, two hundred and fifty thousand people attended the event, with many of them clutching CMA Music Festival tickets.
