Janis Ian was born as Janis Eddy Fink in 1952. Her birthplace is New York City. While she was just sx years old she started taking piano lessons and by the time she was a teenage she had learned to fluently play instruments like guitar, flute, French horn and harpsichord. She attended East Orange High School in the state of New Jersey. While she was still in school she started listening to folk music especially of seasoned artists like Odetta and Joan Baez. In 1971 she released Present Company that charted on US Billboard at #223, this was the only by Ian that was released by Capitol Records. From 1974 onwards 1981 all her albums namely Between the Lines, Aftertones, Miracle Row, Night Rain, Janis Ian and Restless Eyes were released by Columbia Records. During the decade 2000 most of her albums were released by popular folk music label Festival Records. An interesting thing to note is that during this time Festival Records released Ian’s albums in the US whereas Cooking Vinyl Records released them in the US. Some of the albums that Janis recorded in 2000 are Breaking Silence, Between the Lines, Miracle Row, Night Rains, Folk is the New Black and Revenge.
