The Detroit Symphony Orchestra may not be part of the “Big Five” Club, but it certainly enjoys one of the biggest fans following in the United States! Perhaps the only orchestra, which in association with Motown’s finest, The Supremes, has produced some of the most unforgettable music tunes; it also serves as an academy for upcoming classical music artists! The Orchestra is certainly blessed for being based in Detroit, America’s biggest music gifted city! In addition to producing some fine classical music, the Orchestra also mixes traditional with the new popular music, like no other music ensemble! Needless to say, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra tickets buy you the best kind of music!
Founded in 1914, it is interesting to note that its founders were a group of Detroit women who felt a great need for having classical music ensemble in the city. To make this happen, they all chipped in $100 and promised to find 100 more supporters. In a way, the founding of the Orchestra also tells the story of American philanthropy and enterprising attitudes found especially amongst the women. Soon after, Weston Gales, a young organist from Boston was appointed its first music director. The Orchestra found a home in the old Detroit Opera House and made their debut performance at the same venue on February 26, 1914. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra has only grown ever since those early days!
However, it was not Gales who would turn this Orchestra into one first-class ensemble but Ossip Gabrilowitsch! A Russian pianist, friend of composers like Sergei Rachmaninoff and Gustav Mahler, Gabrilowitsch was appointed the Orchestra’s new music director in 1918. He however accepted the appointment conditionally; he demanded a permanent home for the Orchestra; a new symphony hall. Hence, Orchestra Hall, its present day home and part of the Max M. Fisher Music Center, was built in a record time; less than five months to be exact! With the induction of a new innovating music director and a state-of-the-art symphony hall, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra was on the roll! In 1922, it made history; first radio broadcast of a symphony orchestra concert in the history of the world and not just in the United States! The great Artur Schnabel, as guest pianist and Gabrilowitsch the conductor introduced the great city of Detroit and its greatest orchestra to the world of music!
From 1939-1989 however, the Orchestra for different reasons could not perform at the Orchestra Hall. The Orchestra also faced financial hardships during the Great Depression and had to be disbanded twice. It however kept playing, albeit irregularly, at various venues. However, till 1989, it performed at the Ford Auditorium, on the Detroit River, for good 33 years. Glory diminished if not completely lost was once again resuscitated by music directors like Gunther Herbig, Antal Dorati, Aldo Ceccato, and Sixten Ehrling, etc. But the name of Paul Paray deserves special mentioning, since under his guidance the Orchestra won numerous awards.
As mentioned earlier, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in collaboration with Motown’s best, The Supremes, has produced some of the finest examples of popular music! Matter of fact, the two got together at the Motown studio on W. Grand Boulevard for “Anatomy of Pop: The Music Explosion”, the ABC-TV documentary. Under the guidance of concertmaster, Gordon Staples, the Orchestra provided music for various Motown smash hits like “I’m Satisfied”, “Hungry for Love”, and others, which ruled the music charts at various positions.
Getting back to the “new” home of the Orchestra since 1989, the Orchestra Hall further underwent renovations in 2003 and with a hefty sum of $60 million, today boasts of an education wing, and a recital hall. The Detroit School of Arts was added to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra a year later in 2004. Today, the Max M. Fisher Music Center stands at the top of all music establishments in the United States. The Center and the Orchestra, under the guidance of Leonard Slatkin, is growing in leaps and bounds, providing quality entertainment to the residents of the great city of Detroit! So enjoy the best that the classical music has to offer in Detroit by buying the Detroit Symphony Orchestra tickets now!
