Diana Krall was born in British Columbia, Canada in November, 1964. She belongs to a musical family as her father used to play piano in the house most of the times while her mother used to sing in a community choir. By the age of 4, she started playing herself and began to play jazz at the age of 15 in a local restaurant. She won a Vancouver Music Festival Scholarship and studied music at Berklee College of Music in Boston. She moved back to British Columbia after a year and a half of vigorous studies. She was discovered by the famous Bass player, Ray Brown who took her to Los Angeles to study with Jimmy Rowles. Jimmy polished her singing skills to compliment her piano talent. She returned to Canada in 1993 to release her first album.

Diana Krall’s debut album “Stepping Out” was released in 1993. It was followed by “Only Trust your Heart”. Her third album “All for You: A dedication to Nat King Cole Trio” was a major success. It remained for 70 weeks on Billboard Jazz Charts. Her album “When I look in your eyes” won her first ever Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. This album and “Look of Love” contained orchestral backdrop by Johnny Mendel. Her album “The Girl in the other room” was released after her marriage and reached # 5 on the UK Charts and made its way to the Australian Top 40 Charts as well. Her album “Quiet Nights” was released in 2009 and was quite popular among her fans.

So far, Diana Krall has won 22 Awards and 30 nominations. In 2005, she won 3 major music Awards in Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards. She won her first Grammy Award in 2000 for Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best Engineered Album in the non classical category. In 2001, she won another Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album and in 2003 again for Best Jazz Vocal Album. In 2010, her album “Quiet Night” won her Grammy Award for Best Instrument Arrangement Accompanying Jazz Vocalist. She has also won several Juno Awards. She also won the National Smooth Jazz Awards in 2003 and Socan Awards in 2005. In 2000 she was awarded the Order of British Columbia. In 2003, University of Victoria awarded her the honorary Ph.D. degree in Fine Arts. She was inducted in the famous Canada’s Hall of Fame in 2004. She has been made the Officer of Order of British Columbia in 2005. In 2008, she was honored in a very special way. The name of Nanaimo Harbour front Plaza was turned into Diana Krall Plaza.
