The Kooks take their band title from a song called Kooks, by David Bowie, who was a major influence to their music. The band signed a contract with Virgin Records soon after their formation, but did not release an album immediately. They focused more on their song writing and live performances, developing their sound and style before starting to record an album. The group went on their first ever live tour, where they performed in support of a band called The Thrills. After completing their tour, they began to record their debut album. The record was released in the year 2005 in London, United Kingdom and was titled Inside In/Inside Out. It went on to become a major success, reaching the ninth spot on the UK Album Chart. It also yielded several hit songs, including She Moves in Her Own Way, You Don’t Love Me, naïve, Sofa Song, Eddie’s Gun and many more as well.

Within a year of its release, the British Phonographic Industry gave their debut album a quadruple platinum status in the United Kingdom. In addition to this, the International Federation of Phonographic Industry gave it a platinum status across Europe and the group went on to win several awards including a Brit Award nomination as well as the MTV Award for best Ireland and UK act award in the year 2006. The follow up album of The Kooks was issued in April of the year 2008 under the name of Konk. The name of the album was based on the studio in which its recording took place. The record topped the UK Albums Chart within a week of its release, and produced 3 Top Fifty songs, one of which became their most popular song, Always Where I Need To Be. The album also made it into the Billboard 200 in the United States and gained a gold status in both Ireland and the United Kingdom.

The Kooks released their third album on the 12 th of September, 2011 in the United Kingdom. The record was titled Junk of the Heart and went on to reach the charts in Ireland and New Zealand. The producer of the record was Tony Hoffer. One of the most popular song from the album was Is It Me, which was issued a few days before the release of the album and became an instantaneous success. The banddescribe themselves as the “musical whores.” They have cited several musicians as their influences, including Chris de Burgh, Bob Dylan, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and many others as well.
