Based in the American state of Utah, Real Salt Lake enjoys the professional status of a club that homes one of the top soccer teams. The club is a member of the top notch league in North American soccer, the Major League Soccer.
Real Salt Lake became the twelfth member of MLS on July 14, 2004. The team got its official name a few months later, in October. Their first acquisition ever was of the great forward from Dallas Burn, Jason Kreis . The team’s first match was played on April 2, 2005 when they faced the ‘New York Metrostars’. Kreis was first player in the history of the franchise to hit the first goal for the team. Their first home match took place eight days later against ‘Colorado Rapids’ in Rice-Eccles Stadium, which they won. However, their season was a very disappointing one as they set a record of being the only team to have gone without a score for 557 minutes.
The next season yielded slightly better results for Real Salt Lake as the team won their foremost road win when they beat ‘LA Galaxy’ three points to zero. What was great about RSL’s performance was that they entered the game having set a record of the longest streak of losses, 18 matches, in the history of MLS. But the win against LA Galaxy was followed by two more wins and 4 drawn matches. Though they could not keep this up, their performance led to the formation of their very own home ground.
In 2007, despite the addition of some great players like Luis Tejada , Chris Klein, Nick Rimando and Freddy Adu, the team was not able to pull itself up. The club called for a total overhaul. As a result, most of these players left the team by the end of the year. Real Salt Lake brought in Kyle Beckerman, Jamison Olave and Chris Seitz among others. In 2008, they turned their fortune 180 degrees and lost only one game. With their own stadium, Rio Tinto Stadium , home ground advantage improved their performances. From May 2009 onwards, Real Salt Lake has not lost a single league match!
Real Salt Lake beat the ‘Chicago Fire’ in the final of the Eastern Conference Championship. Then they went on to become the victors of the MLS Cup 2009 when they beat their old rivals LA Galaxy. They equaled ‘San Jose Earthquakes’ record streak of remaining unbeaten throughout the season. President Obama honored them at a press conference at the White House.
Real Salt Lake played the final match of the 2010–11 CONCACAF Champions League which made them the first ever team of the MLS to do so. Though they lost, they became the first ever American soccer club to be enlisted among the WorldClubRankings.com’s Top 25 .
