The AFC or the American Football Conference along with its counterpart the NFC or the National Football Conference together comprise the National Football League or NFL. Each conference is comprised of sixteen teams thus making a total of thirty two for the National Football League. The American Football Conference was originally known as the American football League and was a separate entity until its merger with the NFL in 1970. After the merger in order to equalize the teams in the two conferences three teams that originally played in the NFL were added to the American Football Conference. Five additional teams were also created to join the AFC Divisional pool however two of the teams left the conference leaving the current total of 16. These 16 teams are divided in the AFC Divisional pool comprising of four divisions namely the AFC North, AFC South, AFC West and AFC East.
The schedule of the AFC Divisional pool is organized in such a way that each of the teams play against the other teams within their divisions twice, one being a home game and the other being an away game. This regular season format is augmented by eight additional games that are played with teams from two other NFL divisions. The National Football Conference also operates on the same philosophy and its matches are structured in the same way. This allows the teams to not only play against opponents within their own divisions but also with those of other divisions. At the end of the regular season the division winners must face off against each other in order to gain the title of the conference champions. The conference champions then battle in the ultimate stage of American football the Super Bowl.
