The performing arts center is built on a site where Orlando Municipal Auditorium used to stand once. Orlando Municipal Auditorium was erected back in 1926 and underwent extensive overhaul during 1975 and 1977, during which several additions and modifications were made to the entire auditorium. This entire renovation process of the auditorium took around $2,300,000 and following the completion of the renovation process, the auditorium was renamed to Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre, to honor former Mayor of the city, Bob Carr. The auditorium underwent another brief modernization process later in 1991. Even though the auditorium has been thoroughly renovated on two occasions, the original Municipal Auditorium façade still stays the same way as it always was from the very beginning.  
 
In addition to other occasional events that are held at the auditorium, Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre is a permanent host for the performances of Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra and Orlando Philharmonic. During the earlier years, Orlando Opera also called the auditorium their home stage. Presently, alongside the regular performances of the in house orchestras, Bob Carr performing arts centre plays host to a number of other exhibitions and shows of different sorts.
 
Bob Carr Centre is only going to stay by the end of 2013, as in 2014 Dr. P. Phillips Orlando Performing Arts Center will take its place. The petition of laying foundation to a much more state of the art and modernized performing arts center was made official back in 2007. In 2007, the decision to make some significant improvements to Citrus Bowl and the construction of Amway Center were also made official. As of the moment, it is not decided that whether the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre will be demolished or not. However mayor of the city did gave hint that the current performing arts center might start serving the purpose of gaming competition complex.
