Wilmington Blue Rocks
The Wilmington Blue Rocks play in the Northern Division of the Carolina League. They are a Minor League Baseball team that was founded in 1993 when the Peninsula Pilots were relocated to the riverfront in Wilmington, Delaware.
The Carolina League is an advanced Single-A league. The name ‘Blue Rocks’ was chosen because of the blue granite found along the Brandywine River in Wilmington.
The standouts among the 91 Blue Rocks who have gone on to the major leagues include: Carlos Beltran, Johnny Damon, Jon Lieberm Mike Sweeney, Danny Schell, and Angel Berroa.
The Wilmington Blue Rocks team played minor league baseball in the 1940s and 1950s, before the modern Blue Rocks. Robin Roberts played for these Blue Rocks while he was a minor leaguer in the Philadelphia Phillies organization.
These days the Blue Rocks play at Judy Johbson Field at Daniel S. Frawley Stadium in Wilmington’s Riverfront district. They have played a major role in bringing prosperity to the Riverfront district, which was at one time, a run down area of the city.
Sportscenter did stories on the Blue Rocks when they were featured in Sportscenter’s 50 States in 50 Days, in 2005.The Blue Rocks’ brought in the largest crowd in team history, when they played the August 19th game featuring SportsCenter.

The Daniel S. Frawley stadium was known as Legends Stadium, and it was named after the many Delaware sports legends. The stadium was renamed after Frawley died while playing a recreational basketball game. On Nov. 11, 2007, owner and founder Matt Minker died.
R.R.M (Bob) Carpenter brought professional baseball back to the city with the original Wilmington Blue Rocks, in 1940. The team was a Class Interstate League affiliate of the Phildelphis A’s. Hall-of-Famer Connie Mack owned Blue Rocks for their first four years.
Another Hall-of-Famer, Chief Bender, served as the Blue Rocks first manager. Carpenter, who was a partner with Mack since the Blud Rocks’ inception, took full ownership of the club in 1943 for their last nine years. The Blue Rocks played in Wilmington Park, which was considered one of the finest minor league parks in the country.
The Blue Rocks won four Governor Cup titles. They missed the postseason only twice in 13 years in the Interstate League.
Some of the notable figures who played for the Blue Rocks before they went on to major leagues included: pitchers, Robin Roberts and Curt Simmons, and outfielder, Elmer Valo. Their final session in the Instate League was in 1952.
The Blue Rocks returned to professional baseball in 1993 as Class-A Carolina League affiliate of Kansas City Royals. The Blue Rocks have had great on-field success, and Wilmington has one of the best winning averages in all of Minor League Baseball.
They have won eight Northern Division titles in 12 years and four Carolina League championships.
The Blue Rocks also work with the Delaware State Education Association to bring to us their successful Rocky’s Reading Challenge. This program is created to show children how much fun reading can be.
Students are encouraged to read ten books, and if they do so, they receive a free ticket to a Blue Rocks game. Over 180 area schools signed up for Rocky’s Reading Challenge during the 2007 season.
The Wilmington Blue Rocks have provided family entertainment to over 4.2 million fans for more than a decade. They were selected by ESPN to host the Delaware highlights in their ”50 States in 50 Days” tour. They brought in the largest single attendance crowd of 7,535, and welcomed over 315,000 fans this past season.
