A Brief History of UCLA Bruins Athletics Program

The UCLA Bruins athletics program dates back to 1919, when the school established a football team. Over the years, the program has expanded to include more than 25 sports teams, including basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, track and field, and more. The Bruins have won more than one hundred NCAA team championships, the most of any school in the country. Basketball

UCLA’s men’s basketball team is one of the most storied in NCAA history, with a record 11 NCAA championships to their name. Jackie Robinson – Robinson broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. He played baseball and football for UCLA in the early 1940s and was a standout athlete in both sports.

Troy Aikman – Aikman played quarterback for the Bruins in the late 1980s before going on to have a Hall of Fame career in the NFL. He won three Super Bowls with the Dallas Cowboys and was named to six Pro Bowls.

Bill Walton – Walton is considered one of the greatest college basketball players of all time. He played for the Bruins in the early 1970s, leading the team to two national championships. He went on to have a successful NBA career, winning two championships.

Russell Westbrook – Westbrook played basketball for the Bruins from 2006 to 2008 before being drafted into the NBA. He has since become one of the league’s best players, winning the NBA MVP award in 2017.

Ann Meyers – Meyers played basketball and volleyball for UCLA in the 1970s and went on to become one of the greatest female basketball players of all time. She played for the U.S. Women’s National Team and was the first woman to sign a contract with an NBA team.

Karch Kiraly – Kiraly played volleyball for the Bruins in the early 1980s and went on to become one of the greatest volleyball players of all time. He won three Olympic gold medals and was inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame in 2001.

Maurice Jones-Drew – Jones-Drew played football for the Bruins in the mid-2000s before being drafted into the NFL. He had a successful career as a running back, earning three Pro Bowl selections and leading the league in rushing in 2011.

Heather Burge – Burge played basketball for the Bruins in the early 1990s and went on to have a successful career in the WNBA. She won two WNBA championships with the Houston Comets and was named to the league’s All-Star team in 1997.
