The city of Toledo has a long association with the sport that goes even before the Mud Hens inception. The Toledo Mud Hens have been associated with the New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians, Philadelphia Phillies and the Minnesota Twins but the Detroit Tigers have been there affiliate for the longest time. The Mud Hens became a part of the International League 1965 when they became AAA affiliated of the legendary New York Yankees. That was a very historic move for the city as it had been deprived of a team since the mid 1950’s. The arrival of the 1960’s brought with it renewed interest in baseball. The New York Yankees moved the Richmond Club to the city and named it the Toledo Mud Hens. That move gave the citizens of the city a huge lift and a chance to go and support their own minor league team for the first time in years.
 
They became the Detroit Tigers affiliates in 1967. That coming together immediately paid dividends as the Mud Hens won the division the same year and followed that up with a league title in 1968.  The two teams parted ways in 1973 but got back together in 1987 and it has been a match made in heaven since.
 
The 2000’s have been very kind to them. They have won four division titles since 2002. On top of that, they have also managed to get their hands on a couple of league crowns since 2006 to solidify their status as one of the dominant forces in recent years.
