The Washington Ballet – The History

The Washington Ballet was founded in the year 1976 but its roots go back to the year 1944. The Washington School of Ballet was formed by the legendary Mary Day in the that year and eventually it grew in stature. 32 years later, the school turned into the company which is now known as The Washington Ballet.

The first season saw the company come up with three productions, orchestrated by Choo San Goh. Goh was to go on to become the company’s Associate Artistic Director. Goh’s attention to detail and skill level made The Washington Ballet a thoroughly professional organization. Goh passed away in 1987 but not before choreographing an impressive 19 ballets.

During the 1980s and the 1990s, The Washington Ballet played seasons not only in the nation’s capital but also in different countries like Singapore, Spain, Russia, Malaysia, China, and Japan among others. Mary Day left her post of the artistic director of the company in 1999 and was replaced by Septime Webre. In the year 2000, The Washington Ballet went to Havana, Cuba and became the first ever American ballet organization to perform in the country in four decades. Webre took the company to new heights by coming up with initiatives that transformed The Washington Ballet.

In February of 2016, Webre made the announcement of leaving The Washington Ballet by the end of June and he was replaced by Julie Kent. Kent had hung up her boots as a dancer with the famous American Ballet Company after close to three decades. She has used her experience to expand the company’s performance repertoire and has initiated community engagement programs. She has done all of this while staying true to the traditional foundations of The Washington Ballet.

The Nutcracker

The original Nutcracker was performed for the very first time in 1892 at Saint Petersburg’s legendary Imperial Mariinsky Theatre. The two-act ballet was choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov while Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote the accompanying score. Today, it ranks as one of the greatest pieces of work in the history of performing arts.

It was a 20-minute long production that changed the landscape of performing arts forever. A lot of companies have given their unique take on The Nutcracker over the years but the basic storyline has remained the same. The plot revolves around a girl named Clara who travels to a magical world in her sleep. That place brings all her toys to life, including her precious The Nutcracker that a friend of hers broke in real life.

Clara is elated to find her Nutcracker all well but the bad Mouse King has other plans. He wants to get the Nutcracker, but in his way stands Clara. He shifts his focus to Clara then but the Nutcracker, who has now transformed into a prince, comes to the rescue.

The Washington Ballet and The Nutcracker

The Nutcracker’s history with The Washington Ballet goes back to the days of Mary Day. Under her watch, this iconic ballet made its Washington Ballet debut in the year 1961.
