Few amongst us have had things handed to us in a silver platter. However, when one is one of The Platters, one can keep on serving themselves with all the goodies and treats that they can handle. Over the course of some 6 odd decades, members of the various incarnations and doppelgangers of the Los Angeles based doo-wop/R&B/Rock N’ Roll group The Platters have been relishing upon the successes of their touring accomplishments and hit singles. The Platters arrived on the music scene at a time when a lot of new rock n’ roll acts were coming on the Horizon, such as Elvis “The Pelvis” Presley, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard. However, The Platters chose to initially stay below the radar of hype and commercial runaway commercial success, instead bidding their time and gradually building up tempo to become one of the most enduring and profitable groups around.
Alex Hodge, Cornell Gunter, Joe Jefferson , and Herb Reed came together in 1953 to constitute the original lineup of The Platters that was initially managed by Ralph Bass . However, whilst under contract with Federal Records, they remained a fledgling band of doo-wopers. It was only when Buck Ram, the songwriter from Chicago happened to “ram” into the group that things started to look up. Under Buck ‘s managerial control, The Platters initially recorded few songs backing Linda Hayes and then achieved their own front billing with the addition of Linda’s brother Tony Williams as well as Zola Taylor as the lead vocalists. A label change from Federal to Mercury completed the icing on the cake, which Buck shrewdly squeezed out by negotiating a 2-for-1 arrangement with the latter record company that booked The Platters as a package deal along with the Penguins, which were also managed by him.
The Platters had achieved marginal success under Federal, with their single "Only You (And You Alone)" not even being considered for release. Nevertheless, Buck saw its potential and had the group re-record the number. The gamble paid off, with “Only You” breaking into the top-ten slot in the Billboard Hot 100 charts and topping the R&B one in 1955. However, it was The Platters’ second single "The Great Pretender" that brought them center-stage by “pretending” and charming its way to the very top of the Billboard Hit 100 and R&B charts and keeping its act together on the latter for 11 impressive weeks. “The Great Pretender” truly asserted its greatness when it was covered in 1987 by Freddie Mercury of the rock legends Queen, and peaked at the 4 th spot on the UK singles chart. Other hits singles from the original lineups wonder years include "My Prayer," "You’ll Never Never Know," "I’m Sorry," "Twilight Time," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" and "Harbor Lights". The Platters also sealed their iconic status by becoming the first African American group to top the US pop charts and then served themselves with a silver screen appearance in what would be the first of 27 films, 1956’s rock n’ roll based Rock Around the Clock .
The sixties turned out to be a dark chapter in The Platters’ otherwise scintillating legacy. Legal haggling ensued between the group and their label Mercury Records, with Williams making his exit for good and forming his own Platters based group. Buck Ram however retained his brood of Platters that kept on performing with a lineup featuring Sonny Turner, Herb Reed, David Lynch, Nate Nelson and Barbara Randolph/Sandra Dawn. With Sonny Turner and Herb Read also bidding adieu towards the end of the sixties and Monroe Powell coming in as a lead vocalist, the membership of The Platters underwent a complete renewal for the first time around. The group that had been the first rock n’ roll act to have a top-ten album in the US had their legendary status concretized by being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.
