The Scranton/Wilkes-Barres RailRiders is a baseball team from Moosic, Pennsylvania in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area. They mainly play in the Northern division of the International League and are the Triple-A associate of the New York Yankees. The team’s home is the PNC Field since 1989. Founded in 1919 in Reading, Pennsylvania as the Reading Barons, the team has since changed its name quite a number of times from the Marines in 1920, Aces in 1921 and Keystones in 1923. They played in Reading for thirteen years (1919-1932) and then moved to Albany, New York and became the International League manifestation of the Albany Senators; there they played for 4 years (1932-1936).
 
From New York it shifted to New Jersey and became the Jersey City Giants and played in the city for another thirteen years. The Jersey City Giants are one of the most recognized teams in the minor league baseball. They then moved yet again to Ottawa, Ontario and became the Ottawa Giants in 1951 but were renamed to Ottawa Athletics the next year. They played in Ottawa for only three years (1951-1954) and relocated to Columbus, Ohio and became the Columbus Jets. There they played for fifteen years (1955-1970).
 
Moving again to Charleston, West Virginia they now became the Charleston Charlies and played there from 1971 to 1983. They were successful here as they made a 78-62 record which propelled them to win the Governors’ Cup, sharing prospects with Houston Astros And Toronto Jay blues, after finishing post-season with a below four average. After finishing the season they moved once more to Maine and became the Maine Guides. 1984 for the Maine Guides was the most successful, as it became the best team to play in the resort town of Old Orchard Beach. They posted a good record of 77-59 but later lost to the Pawtucket Red Sox in the final round. They had low attendance the entire season due to a seasonal fan-base and a severe mosquito problem.
 
Finally in 1987, a group called the Northeast Baseball Inc. from Scranton, Pennsylvania bought the team in the hopes that they would move to the future PHS Stadium. The Maine ownership sued the NBI, claiming that it violated the terms of purchase. NBI filed a suit against the Maine ownership in return and after a long court session and after a heated discussion, the NBI won. They finally moved to the PHS stadium and played there as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders.
 
The team affiliated with the New York Yankees in an agreement to end the 28 year old agreement of the Yankees with the Columbus Clippers. The club has enjoyed success in the first four seasons as the Yankees. The SWB completed the season with a record of 84-59 and caught the IL North Division for the fourth time in its history but lost to Richmond in the semi-finals.
