In 1942, San Francisco Ballet came into existence as an entity separate from the Opera.Under artistic director, Christiansen the ballet began to flourish as a trueart proponent and ballettraining facility. In 1951 Lew Christensen joined the Ballet as Co-director. He was America’s first premier danseur and in a years time was able to prove his substance as the new artistic director for the company. Christensen overhauled the Ballet and led it to the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival (1956). From here the ballet was taken to international fronts. Touring in Asia, it made a lasting impression as the first American Ballet company that performed there. Since its beginning the San Francisco Ballet staged in various local venues. In 1972 it made the War Memorial Opera House as its first home.

Michael Smuin joined the Ballet in 1972 and collaborated with Christiansen to present Cinderella . This highly successful full length production paved way for Romeo and Juliet (1976). This show became a monster hits that went up to the Emmy Awards where illa Kim bagged the Outstanding Costume Design award. Smuin won an Emmy for his choreography for the Great Performances-Dance in America (the first ballet show that made it to television). With a decade occupied with financial crisis and restoration, the San Francisco Ballet entered a new era in the mid eighties.

Helgi Tomasson' came and created repertories of the Nutcracker and Swan Lake . These productions were followed by The Sleeping Beauty , Romeo & Juliet , Giselle , Don Quixote and Residence Yuri Possokhov . Nutcracker (2004) became an astounding production that still occupies as the longest running show of the San Francisco Ballet. Tomasson’s years were incredibly rewarding for the Ballet. The company reached unprecedented commercial success. It kept high quality full length productions coming; making San Francisco Ballet became a top-notch Ballet as per national ranks. The evening-length Sylvia (2004) became a headliner with the freshest choreography by Mark Morris. The same year the Laurence Olivier Award came to the San Francisco Ballet, for the Best Seasonal Performance .
