Until the 1940s, the Rutgers University kept its sports independent and unaffiliated with any formal athletic conference. Starting from 1946, the varsity teams have remained part of the Middle Three Conference, Ivy League, Middle Atlantic Conference; and from 1991, the Knights football team joined the Big East Conference. The Rutgers University football program has an accomplished history. They have appeared in nine bowl games since 2005 and have won five out of them. The Knights also have a national title and three conference championships and have produced forty-five consensus All-Americans as well.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights football team won their first conference championship in 1958, followed by two consecutive titles in 1960 and 1961. The 1994 season brought the 125^th anniversary for the team as well as the newly renovated and expanded Rutgers Stadium. By the turn of the century, the Rutgers got a new coach and continued their success streak. In 2003, they won the season finale with a 24-7 score and repeated their success story in 2004 with a 19-14 record.
