This magnificence of the Roundhouse, originally constructed in 1846 as an engine shed, is recognized as a stupendous illustration of mid-19th century architecture, predominantly its ground-breaking use of cast and wrought iron to sustain the slate roof. Its exercise as a steam engine repair shed didn’t last for a very long period, owing to speedy technology advances and before long, the Roundhouse was being used as a bonded warehouse by Gilbey’s Gin. Following that in 1964 dramatist Arnold Wesker established Centre 42 at the Roundhouse, named after the trade union movement Article 42 stating that arts should be for everyone. This provided the platform for a well-known, avant-garde performing arts venue. Some of the most unforgettable and outstanding theatrical performances in the ’60s and ’70s were staged here. During this epoch, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Peter Brook and The Living Theatre of New York all performed at the Roundhouse.
The recent past Centre 42 was shut down in 1983 owing to scarce funds and until the mid 1990s a number of proposals to revive the building failed. In 1996 The Norman Trust, led by Torquil Norman, a local businessman bought the Roundhouse and instituted the Roundhouse Trust to restore this splendid building and bring it back to life and to construct a brand new creative centre for young people, namely the Roundhouse Studios.
De La Guarda, Stomp, the Michael Clark Dance Company, Ballet Boyz, Michael Moore, and the RSC all gave excellent performances at the Roundhouse during this stage in time. In 2004 the Roundhouse closed for a ?29.7m redevelopment.
Roundhouse refurbishment John McAslan and Partners were the architects responsible for the redevelopment of this Grade II* listed building. The job was carried out in three phases. Firstly, it was the well-known performing space was restored and it would make possible to facilitate this exceptionally adaptable space with highly developed technology such as flexible seating, lighting and sound. Part of this complex job involved the addition of seven layers to the roof to soundproof it.
Secondly, a state of the art creative centre was to be erected, namely the Roundhouse Studios, for young people aged 13-25 years. Extreme caution was under taken to maintain the old building and built a newer one on the same lines and patterns, except in a bigger and better way!
As part of the re-establishment, the Roundhouse’s rounded glazed roof-lights have been re-instated, permitting the public to witness interior daylight for the first time in over 100 years. The New Wing built in conjunction with the main building lodges the box office, bar and caf?, foyer and offices.
In the extreme centre is present the Roundhouse Studios, a series of high-tech studios, providing an imaginative environment and all the necessary amenities for young people to engage with artists, professionals and their peers in order to develop and realise their creative aspirations.
