Tony Award-winning musical Pippin is back on Broadway after thrilling audiences forty years ago with lyrics and music by Stephen Schwartz, and book by Roger O. Hirson. The story centers on a young prince, determined to discover the purpose of his existence, for which he takes a death-defying journey. His search for significance and meaning brings him to the crossroads; is it more important for him to choose a life of happiness but happens to be too simple to sooth his taste for adventure? Or should he just risk losing everything in pursuit of a very singular ray of glory?

This exciting new production comes directly from the acclaimed run in Boston at the American Repertory Theater, director by Tony-winning Diane Paulus. The musical features brilliant choreography by Bob Fosse alongside some of the most mind-blowing acrobatic moves by Les 7 Doists de la Main, which is the creative force steering the nationwide hit Traces.  Fosse who was the director of the original Broadway show, also played a part in its libretto. This revived musical with yet more awe-inspiring spectacles uses the same premise of the mysterious performance troupe under the lead of Leading Player who narrates Pippin’s curious tale. Its is this curiosity factor in the story combined with the many bedazzling features of the newest production that have brought Pippin tickets back to being the highlight of the theatre world after four decades.

The musical premiered in 1972 at the Imperial Theater where it ran for more than nineteen hundred performances, closing by June 1977. This production was choreographed as well as directed by Bob Fosse with an original cast of Eric Berry as Charles, Jill Clayburgh as Catherine, Leland Palmer as Fastrada, Irene Ryan as Berthe, Ben Vereen as Leading Player, and John Rubinstein as Pippin. The production had its own TV commercial that ran for sixty seconds showing Vereen along with two more dancers in the dance sequence of Glory. This commercial’s famous tagline invited viewers to watch the remaining hundred and nineteen minutes of the musical live, without interruption at Imperial Theatre.

Pippin, the protagonist and Charlemagne, his father, are characters that take after two real-life persons from early Middle Ages, which the plot has presented more fictitiously regarding either. The musical was partly sponsored by Motown Records and since June 2013, its original run has made it the thirty-first longest-performed Broadway show of all time. It has been produced numerous times since the start of the 2000s, including performances at Milburn’s Paper Mill Playhouse in 2000, New York’s World AIDS Day Concert in 2004, Los Angeles’s Mark Taper Forum in 2009, London’s Menier Chocolate Factory in 2011, Kansas City’s Repertory Theatre in 2012, and Cambridge’s American Repertory Theater in 2012-2013. The production features winning musical score comprising of Magic to Do, Corner of the Sky, Simple Joys, With You, Morning Glow, Extraordinary, Kind of Women, Love Song, Prayer for a Duck, and No Time At All, among others.

The show’s Broadway Revival of 2013 brought it an overwhelming load of critical acclaim in the shape of many accolades; it won four Tony Awards in the categories of Best Revival of Musical, Best Actress in Musical, Best Direction in a Musical and Best Features Actress of Musical; Drama League Award for Outstanding Revival of an Off-Broadway or Broadway Musical; four Drama Desk Awards including the category of Outstanding Revival of Musical; seven Outer Critics Circle Awards; and two Adele & Fred Astaire Awards for Outstanding Choreographer in Broadway Show and Outstanding Female Dancer of a Broadway Show which went to Charlotte d’Amboise. This musical has received raving reviews from the most high-profile publications such as The New York Times that described it as astonishing for the 21st century; Entertainment called it simply ‘eye-popping’ and ‘Grade A Amazing’, while USA Today quoted it to be the seasons’ best musical. The prince and his adventure-filled story are here so grab some Pippin tickets and be there for a performance Time Out New York has called the greatest of the Broadway season.
