As a singer and songwriter hailing from Canada, Neil Young (full name Neil Percival Young) is rated amongst the most influential musicians within his generation. He has even been awarded the Order of Canada and the Order of Manitoba. Born at the end of the second Word War, Neil Young began singing solo in Canada at the age of fifteen, in the 1960s. Some of his latest ongoing work is creating an environmental documentary on electric car technology in which he drives a 1959 Lincoln Continental to Washington D.C, a car that runs on Hybrid Technology. He aims for this project to act as a ‘catalyst’ of sorts in environmental activism and as an example for the US government in Washington D.C towards taking actions to save the environment. And it isn’t simply the environment that tickles his fancy – he also founded Farm Aid, an organization for the welfare of farmers, worked with Bridge School Benefits as a musician on the concerts and a number of other charitable works, works that have resulted in his receipt of the Order of Canada and that of Manitoba.
In terms of awards, he has won 4 Juno Awards in 2011, a Grammy Award in 2011, a Grammy Award in 2010, a two time induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, an Oscar nomination, two Honorary Doctorates, ranked 34 on Rolling Stone’s 500 greatest artists of all time with 5 of his albums part of Rolling Stone’s top 500 albums of all time and a number of other awards.
