The Los Angeles County Fair which is also known as simply the L.A. County Fair, is an annual event held in the Fairplex in Pomona, California that is held every September. It is a festival with rides, merchants, food vendors, cooking contests, and livestock. It’s a saga that Walt Disney firstly planned on having Disneyland constructed in Pomona though the city council refused his offer, thinking that the park would not succeed and would cause the city to go into debt. Agreeing to Matthew Tresaugue, previous reporter for the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, it was one of 71 thought cities, but was ruled out due to temperature extremes because it is too hot in summer and too cold at night.
The Los Angeles County Fair takes place in Pomona for full 18 days. It starts in the early September though this year it will be on September 8 through October 1, 2006, closed Mondays & Tuesdays. It is the largest county Fair in all of North America, attracting a million and a half guests annually. This county fair is a good spot to see some of your favorite performers in concert. You’ll also get a chance to find several oldie acts out at Fairplex. Featured musical performers in the past have involved Huey Lewis & the News (“The Heart of Rock & Roll”), Johnny Rivers (“Poor Side of Town”), The Association (“Windy”), Three Dog Night (“Joy to the World”), Jan & Dean (“Dead Man’s Curve”), The Commodores (“Three Times a Lady”), Sister Hazel, Hall & Oates, the Pointer Sisters, Peter Frampton, Smashmouth, Cheap Trick, Bryan White, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Randy Travis, Vonda Shepard, dc Talk, The Temptations, The Neville Bros, Pat Benatar, The Doobie Brothers, REO Speedwagon, Steven Curtis Chapman, Kool & The Gang The Righteous Bros, The Beach Boys, Monica, Jennifer Paige/Blaque, Jars of Clay, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, The Four Tops, The Isley Brothers, The Moffatts, Clay Walker, Isaac Hayes, Kansas and Juice Newton.
The best part of this fair is that the ticket to most of the concerts is free with admission. In 2005, the acts involved Crosby, Stills & Nash, ZZ Top, Hall & Oates, Sugar Ray, Hoobastank, War, Tower of Power, Lifehouse, The Village People, KC and the Sunshine Band and Jos? Feliciano. Whereas the year of 2004 featured performers like Jackson Browne, Willie Nelson, Lonestar, and The Doors of the 21st Century. In 2003, concert acts counted Willie Nelson, War, the B-52’s, Earth, Wind & Fire, Styx, Brad Paisley, KC and The Sunshine Band, Tower of Power and REO Speedwagon.
Most of the big name entertainers appear sometimes at the Fair’s race course or at the Fairplex Hill stage, though there are also lots of small bands and acts during the Fair that include mimes, balloon artists, clowns, jugglers, magicians, steel-drum bands, Blue grass groups, Dixieland bands, local acts… plus fireworks.
