Lollapalooza is a very popular music festival which is held annually and is known to feature famous heavy metal, hip hop bands, alternative rock and punk rock bands and musicians along with comedy and dance performances as well as craft booths. In 2005, William Morris Agency and Perry Farrell made a partnership deal with Capital Sports Entertainment, a company based in the city of Austin, in Texas and they decided to give the Lollapalooza festival a new format, the one that exists today. It was turned into a weekend destination festival and was held annually at a particular place designated for it, which was the Grant Park in Chicago, in Illinois. In 2010, the announcement was made that the Lollapalooza festival was going to make a debut in a foreign destination, that being in Santiago, the capital of Chile, starting from the 2 nd of April and ending on the 3 rd . This division of the festival was produced with another partner coming in, Lotus, which is a company based in Chile. The artists who performed there were 30 Seconds to Mars , Kanye West, The National, Jane’s Addiction, The Killers, The Drums, Cypress Hill, The Flaming Lips, 311 and numerous others.

The very unique and the now old-fashioned word Lollapalooza was chosen by Perry Farrell to name the festival, because of its exceptionality, after he heard it in short film, ‘The Three Stooges’. This term, with time, also came to be referred to a big lollipop. So the sign originally used for the festival has a person holding up a lollipop, signifying the double meaning of the word.The first Lollapalooza festival lined up singers and musicians from a variety of genres of music, including the ‘Ice-T’ which is a rap group, the post-punk band ‘Siouxsie and the Banshees’ and ‘Nine Inch Nails’, to provide industrial music. Another unique aspect of this festival was that it also included features not related with music, such as performances by the Jim Rose Circus Side Show, the Shaolin monks and also an alternative freak show.

The Lollapalooza even had a tent set aside so as to display art and a platform for environment, political non-profit groups, in order to promote political and cultural knowledge. In the early 90s, the festival usually featured alternative and grunge artists along with rap. During these years, there was an increase in the participation side of the festival, as there were more and more other kinds of booths, such as piercing and tattoo parlors, oratory and readings using open-microphones, television smashing pits and others. Lollapalooza also had a second and a third stage for the acts that were local or the new bands and groups.

In the year 2003, the festival was staged in thirty cities throughout the months of July and August. But it was not very successful because of the issue of expensive tickets. Then in 2005 the festival saw as many as 65,000 people who attended it, making it a successful festival.
