The Cow Palace
Originally known as the California State Livestock Pavilion, The Cow Palace is an indoor arena in Daly City, California that borders neighboring San Francisco. It is also the home of the annual Grand National Rodeo and is officially the 1-A District Agricultural Association, a State agency of the California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Division of Fairs and Expositions.
The venue has an interesting history. In 1915, the San Francisco Marina District was the site of the Pan Pacific Exposition. This Exposition featured livestock and, when the events were over and the temporary buildings were set to be razed, a place was needed to house the animals. It took ten years to finance the building project, and legislative delays and the onset of the Great Depression pushed the completion date out further.
The historic Cow Palace, which finally opened in 1941, has hosted more than 50 million visitors in its long history. The facility has served as a staging area for troops during World War II. It also hosted many sports events including the San Francisco Warriors of the NBA from 1962 to 1964 and again from 1966 to 1971. From 1991 to 1993 it also hosted the San Jose Sharks of the NHL until the San Jose Arena was built. During the 1960s and 1970s the SF Examiner Games, a world-class indoor track & field meet, was held annually at the Cow Palace. Additionally it hosted the Bay Bombers of the Roller Derby; the Derby’s world championship playoffs were held at the Cow Palace every fall beginning from 1959 through 1973, when the organization was disbanded. The arena seats 11,089 for ice hockey and 12,953 for basketball. It has also been the home of the annual Grand National Rodeo, Horse & Stock Show since 1941 (except for a break from 1942 to 1945 due to World War II). The venue hosted the 1960 men’s NCAA basketball Final Four and the 1967 NBA All-Star Game. It hosted three WCW Super Brawl shows and recently it was the site of WWE No Way Out, in 2004. The arena seats 11,089 for ice hockey and 12,953 for basketball.
Additionally, the venue has also hosted several famous music concerts. Some of the major performers to come through the Cow Palace in the past include the Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, the Beatles, U2, Prince, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Pink Floyd, Scorpions, Donovan, Kiss, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, M?tley Cr?e, Santana and the Grateful Dead. Coming up at the Cow Palace is the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, Disney on Ice and the Grand National Rodeo, Horse and Stock Show.
