Copps Coliseum
Located in Downtown Hamilton off York Boulevard and Bay Street, is Copps Coliseum, home to the American Hockey League’s Hamilton Bulldogs. Built with a cost of almost $40 million, it is a grand sports and entertainment arena. The arena bowl is indistinguishable from an NHL building, with two massive decks making up the bulk of Copps Coliseum. All seats are randomly coloured. The scoreclock is four-sided and has a video board. Views are all good – the upper bowl is not too far away from the action and the lower bowl has a steep angle of seating which means that every seat is a good one. Copps also features a trade floor underneath one side of the building which is used for a convention centre along with the arena floor. During hockey games the floor is used for the Bulldogs kids club “fun zone”.
This 19,000-seat, NHL-scale stadium includes 60,000 sq. ft. of exhibition and trade show space. The large-span roof, measuring 440 sq. ft. by 300 sq. ft., provides unrestricted viewing from any seat within the complex. An additional 30,000 sq. ft. is offered on the Concourse level. The facility is climate controlled year round for comfort and is designed to accommodate a wide variety of events from entertainment, sports and trade shows to conventions, filming and more.
Copps Coliseum also hosts such large scale events as professional hockey and basketball. The arena has played host to such major events as: Canadian Figure Skating Championships, NHL Hockey, The World Curling Championships, World Junior Hockey Championships, World Judo Championships, and a variety of other activities.
The arena hosted the Canada Cup ice hockey tournament in 1987, and was the site of Mario Lemieux’s famous goal that beat the Soviets 6-5. It hosted the Canada Cup tournament again in 1991 when Team Canada defeated Team USA. In 1990, the Memorial Cup was held here which set the highest attendance record for any single Memorial Cup game, on May 13, 1990 at 17,383 spectators. The arena also hosted the Tim Hortons Brier, the annual Canadian men’s curling championship in March, 2007. The coliseum will be hosting the West 49 Canadian Open, from September 20 to October 1 this year.
While the Copps Coliseum is considered too big for the AHL, junior hockey, or virtually anything else, and lacks the private suites and upmarket facilities commonly found in newer NHL buildings still it is a terrific facility, and even when you’re going to see the AHL’s Bulldogs and the upper bowl is curtained off, it still has a decent atmosphere and is a fun place to watch a hockey game.
